King’s Lynn Academy to deliver two innovative programmes thanks to Opening Schools Facilities funding

Active Norfolk’s Opening Schools Facilities (OSF) project has successfully funded two innovative programmes at King’s Lynn Academy (KLA): ‘Rolling with the Punches’ and the ‘Clubbercise’ exercise class.

These initiatives have brought significant benefits to both staff and students, enhancing physical and mental well-being.

The funding that enabled this initiative comes from the Opening Schools Facilities Fund. Last year, King’s Lynn Academy was one of five schools in West Norfolk to receive a combined total of £53,000.

“It has been a huge success, with teachers, students, and parents noticing an improvement in these students across the board.”

Rolling with the punches

The objective of the ‘Rolling with the Punches’ programme is to improve students’ mood, energy levels, and focus both in the classroom and at home.

This programme consists of one-on-one boxing sessions with Mark, a personal trainer from Motiv8 gym. Mark is a seasoned boxer with national and international experience and leads these sessions. The target group for this programme includes students needing support with mood and focus.

Mr. Brian Reeve-Hayes, PSHE & Mental Health Lead at KLA, reported significant improvements in students’ behaviour and focus. Some students have continued boxing outside school and aim to earn an ASDAN certificate to teach others. The programme helps students learn respect, channel aggression positively, and gain coaching qualifications

Clubbercise Exercise Class

The objective of the ‘Clubbercise’ exercise class is to encourage teachers and staff to engage in physical activity in a fun, social environment. This dance-based exercise class is held after school and is led by Stacey Lee, Head of Department at KLA. The target group for this class includes school staff.

Staff members have become more active, even using the school gym on other days. The class provides a social outlet, fostering a sense of community among staff from different departments. Participants enjoy starting their week with the class and appreciate the social interaction. Programme Impact

Becky Gillick, West Norfolk Locality Officer, expressed her delight with the success of the OSF programme, stating, “KLA has been a fantastic school to design this programme of work. It is visible how the Opening Schools Facilities programme can make a difference to the staff, children, and parents of the local community. We look forward to continuing our work with them in the next year of OSF.”
